We are thrilled to announce that plans are underway for the construction of a new building on our campus - The Zak Myers Foodbank and Service Learning Center! This addition to ZAK Myers Memorial Park was made possible by the generous support of James and Josie Myers, parents of our late beloved social science teacher, Zak Myers '11. We are so grateful for their continued support of Cathedral Catholic High School!

Dr. Calkins announced this new project to our Dons community after Ash Wednesday Mass. His speech can be found below.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. This is a time when we are called to live out our faith by giving up, taking up and lifting up - fasting, almsgiving and prayer.

My favorite modern-day religious and spiritual writer, Bishop Robert Barron, says that Lent is about doing things, things that involve the body as much as the mind, that involve the exterior of your life as much as the interior.

The three great practices of Lent—prayer, fasting and almsgiving—are three things you do.

As you can see from the east end of Manchester Stadium, the construction of ZAK Myers Memorial Park has commenced. The structure you see from the field will be a wonderful gathering place for students, employees, parents, alumni and friends of the Dons. This gathering space was made possible because James and Josie Myers decided to DO something on campus to honor their son and our teacher and friend, Zak.

James and Josie Myers are role models for all of us to follow. They are deeply religious people, committed to the practice of our Catholic faith, and today, on Ash Wednesday, they continue to “do” almsgiving.

Due to the generous support of James and Josie Myers, I am thrilled to announce an addition to ZAK Myers Memorial Park. Plans are underway for the Zak Myers Foodbank and Service Learning Center, a second building to be included in ZAK Myers Memorial Park.

In partnership with Catholic Charities of San Diego, Cathedral Catholic students and employees will more fully engage with service opportunities in San Diego to demonstrate our commitment to care for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged among us and our neighbors. This structure will be a visible sign of our commitment and obligation to serve others; it will be a place, much like the St. Thérèse Chapel, where we put our Catholic faith into action. This will be another place on campus where we “do” our faith.

Please join me in expressing our gratitude to James and Josie Myers for this beautiful new building and program!
