Cathedral Catholic High School Placement Test

Cathedral Catholic presently intends to host the Cathedral Catholic High School placement test on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Each 9th-grade applicant is automatically registered for the Cathedral Catholic High School placement test. In February, the school will communicate make-up opportunities for those who cannot sit for the exam on January 24.

Cathedral Catholic High School has decided to move away from the High School Placement Test (HSPT). The school has determined that the HSPT is not the best instrument for its own placement needs. The Cathedral Catholic High School placement test is a two-hour test administered on campus.

The Cathedral Catholic High School placement test covers math and English. The test is prepared with 7th-8th grade common-core standards in mind in order to target basic skills. Students do not necessarily have to undergo special preparation as they might with a standardized test. Both sections are on scantrons.

  • In the math section, students are assessed on material from pre-algebra through second-semester algebra.
  • In the English section, students are assessed on passage-based reading comprehension tasks (fiction and nonfiction), as well as Language Arts (grammar, syntax, sentence correction, etc.).
  • There is an optional English challenge test supplement for students who wish to be considered for 9th-grade English Honors. This supplement is a writing component and adds an additional 45 minutes to the test.

This placement assessment is used for placement purposes only. For enrollment consideration, the enrollment committee continues to reference previous courses and grades from 7th and 8th grade, as well as teacher and principal recommendations.

Applicants applying to Cathedral Catholic High School who take the test at Cathedral Catholic are given priority consideration for enrollment, scholarship and tuition assistanceNote: If applicants require additional testing time, learning documentation must be submitted along with the enrollment application no later than January 9, 2026. Learning documentation must be either an IEP or private, formal psycho-educational evaluation indicating an intellectual testing component, as well as an academic component and diagnosis and report, issued by a licensed psycho-educational specialist. Please note that 504 plans do not qualify.
