Racial Awareness Formation

Email sent to our community on Monday, June 8:

Please read this letter from our school principal, Dr. Calkins.

Email sent to our community on Wednesday, June 3:

The last few months and weeks have been trying times for our nation and community because of the pandemic and the protests that started with the senseless death of George Floyd.  Bishop McElroy has made this statement to help us through the challenges we are experiencing. Please read it.

For the past three years, Cathedral Catholic has studied, brainstormed, and implemented programs to address issues of racial prejudice and discrimination.  Just this past year, students and adults were able to listen, learn, and experience the following:

  • Presentation by San Diego District Attorney Leonard Trinh on Hate-Speech and Racism
  • Two Adult Book Studies on Race
  • Cultural Celebrations, including African American Culture, during Catholic Schools Week
  • Black History Month Celebration
  • Migration Week Celebration
  • Racial Awareness Formation Time (RAFT) for Adults
  • Consultation with Pacific Educational Group to Implement Courageous Conversation Protocol and presentation to school employees by PEG founder Glenn Singleton. Glenn’s book, Courageous Conversation about Race, was foundational to a lot of the work at Cathedral Catholic last year.

The death of George Floyd has only strengthened the school’s resolve to identify racial prejudice and discrimination where it exists at Cathedral Catholic and work to eliminate it.

While the CCHS community has taken steps in the right direction to address the issue of racial prejudice and discrimination, we will be developing a plan this summer to continue the work of racial harmony.

In the meantime, here are some additional statements and resources available to you:

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
National Catholic Educational Association
Open Wide Our Hearts
California Association of School Counselors on Racism

Please join us in prayer for those who are affected daily by the evils of racism and those who tirelessly advocate for necessary change.  We also pray for healing, justice, peace, and the safety of all people, including those leading our communities and protecting our communities.
