Twelve years ago rugby started as a varsity sport at Cathedral. Over that short period of time Cathedral Rugby has produced numerous High School and College All Americans, US National Team members and more recently professional rugby players. Major League Rugby was established in the US three years ago and Cathedral Rugby has sent 5 players to the League, more than any other high school in the US. A major milestone was reached last Saturday in Los Angeles when two former Cathedral teammates, Aaron Mitchell (2014) and Ryan James (2018) squared off against each other in the LA Coliseum.
Aaron and Ryan played together on the Cathedral 2014 High School Championship teams and both received numerous accolades for their efforts at Cathedral. Prior to graduation both Aaron and Ryan represented the United States as members of the US High School All American Team during their high school years. After their Cathedral playing days were over Aaron attended Fresno State on a football scholarship and joined the San Diego Legion as a prop two years ago. Ryan on the other hand pursued a professional rugby career upon graduation by perfecting his skills as a wing with various high level clubs within the US including the San Diego Legion. In 2020, he was drafted by the Dallas Jackals but, signed with the Los Angeles Gilitinis. The Gilitinis are a new addition to Major League Rugby this year and are undefeated thus far.
Other Cathedral rugby players who have played in the MLR are:
Drew Gaffney 2013
Alec Barton 2013
Gil Covey 2012
Aaron and Ryan will square off again when LA visit San Diego on June 19.
