The scholarships vary greatly. Many have very strict deadlines, so please be aware and follow the directions accordingly. Athena San Diego Merit ScholarshipFive merit scholarships are available to qualified San Diego County graduating high school women who in the 2010 school year will be attending a four-year university and who plan a career in the sciences (science, math, engineering, computer science). Outstanding applicants will be well-rounded young women who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership in school organizations, and community involvement. Scholarships will be considered for renewal as long as the recipient: 1) can demonstrate that she remains enrolled in a science, math, engineering, or computer science program at a four-year university and is thereby committed to a career in the respective field; and 2) provides documentary proof of a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Annual attendance by each recipient at the Athena San Diego Pinnacle Awards in encouraged. Award: $2,500 (See above for more information) Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California, Inc. Undergraduate ScholarshipTo be eligible, students must: be of Portuguese descent on father’s or mother’s side; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; maintained a minimum of 3.5 GPA in high school (grades 9-12) and be a graduating senior of a California high school; meet all requirements set down by an accredited university or college of the student’s choice; participated in at least three extra-curricular activities while in high school. Award: $500 Jackie Robinson Foundation's Scholarship ProgramThrough its Education and Leadership Development Program, the Jackie Robinson Foundation provides scholarships of up to $7,500 annually to minority high school students showing leadership potential and demonstrating financial need to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice. Students must be a U.S. citizen in order to qualify. Award: Up to $7,500 annually North County Italian Association ScholarshipTo be eligible, students must: be of Italian heritage; be a graduating senior; plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university or a junior/community college; have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale; be a resident of North County and have been a resident for a period of not less than 12 consecutive months; and be a citizen of the United States. Award: $500 Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship ProgramThis program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place to live. The student must be nominated. The young volunteer’s actions must be described in detail and should document efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age. Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6-12 and 13-18) , and awards are given on three levels. Award: Described Above USA Federal Credit Union ScholarshipsUSA Federal Credit Union Scholarships: Award: Stated Above for Each Scholarship MiraCosta College Foundation Fall 2010 Scholarship ApplicationThe MiraCosta College Foundation has established a scholarship fund that provides financial assistance to incoming freshmen from district high schools who have achieved outstanding academic success and plan to continue their education at MiraCosta College. Incoming high school student eligibility is based on their current, unofficial high school transcript. Award: Not Stated Ayn Rand Education Essay Contests“Anthem” Essay Contest Award: Varies San Diego Association of Black Journalists (SDABJ) Scholarship ProgramThe SDABJ Scholarship Program is offered to assist San Diego area high school students who are interested in journalism to advance their education. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with financial need who plan to attend a university or college and major in print or broadcast journalism, English or mass communications. The application requires that candidates indicate how the students plan to ensure that the African-American community’s voice be heard in the mainstream media. Award: $1,000 Sean Maloy Community Service ScholarshipThis scholarship has been established in loving memory of Sean Maloy to acknowledge a student’s exemplary community service record. The award may be used for continuing education at any accredited institution located within the United States. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required. Award: $500 Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC)/Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources (HACER) San Diego ScholarshipApplicants must be currently enrolled high school seniors in San Diego County who have at least one parent of Hispanic heritage and who are eligible to attend a two- or four-year college or university with a complete course of study. Students must reside within San Diego County. Applicants must be legal U.S. residents, be less than 21 years of age and have a minimum 2.7 GPA. Applicants may apply for only one RMHC scholarship program. Award: Ten one-year scholarships worth $2,000 each Jessie Klicka Foundation ScholarshipCCHS is allowed to only submit two applications from our school. To be eligible for this scholarship, the following is required: San Diego City or County high school seniors only; medium to outstanding grades; extracurricular activities; family financial need; complete information on the Klicka forms; student to attend four-year school (no community colleges). All applications must be complete and submitted by CCHS. Awards will be renewable for four years, depending upon scholastic standing. Please see Ms. Jung if you are interested in applying. Award: Between $1,000 and $2,000 Unity Lodge #632 Annual Educational ScholarshipsTo be eligible, students must: 1) be a graduating high school senior in the current year; 2) be a citizen of the United States of America and a legal resident of California residing in the County of San Diego for at least one year; 3) have a minimum unweighted 3.5 cumulative GPA; must be accepted by an accredited four-year institution of higher learning as a full-time undergraduate freshman in the fall of the current year. The student need not show evidence of financial aid. Award: Five awards ranging between $1,000 and $5,000 Point Loma Credit Union ScholarshipPoint Loma Credit Union will grant three $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors graduating in 2010. Their Scholarship Committee will make selections based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and an essay submitted with the application. The scholarship is available only to members of the credit union. Students who are not currently members are welcome to join in order to apply for a scholarship. Anyone who lives, works, or worships in San Diego or Riverside County is eligible for member for a $5 membership fee and an initial opening deposit of $5. Award: $2,500 Asian Pacific Fund Scholarship--Jack and Jeanette Chu ScholarshipThe Jack and Jeanette Chu Scholarship will grant one award to an incoming freshman majoring in business or an education-related field at UC Berkeley. Applicant criteria includes: incoming freshman majoring in business administration or an education-related field at UC Berkeley; Asian heritage (at least 50 percent)—preference given to students of Chinese heritage; minimum GPA of 3.0; commitment to a career in business or education; preference given to students who have lived in Central America; preference given to students with a record of community service. Award: $5,000 Asian Pacific Fund Scholarship--Banatao Family Filipino American Education FundThe Banatao Family Filipino American Education Fund will award five scholarships of $5,000 to qualified incoming freshman enrolled at four-year colleges or universities. Each scholarship is renewable for a total of four years on the basis of satisfactory academic performance in a full-time undergraduate program. To be eligible, students must be incoming freshman enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year college or university in 2010-11; pursuing a career in engineering or the physical or biological sciences (excluding healthcare); Filipino heritage (at least 50%); minimum GPA of 3.0; demonstrates financial need; resident of one of several California counties, including San Diego. Award: $5000 Asian Pacific Fund Scholarship--Human Capital ScholarshipThe Human Capital Scholarship will grant two one-time awards to first-generation college students from underrepresented groups attending the University of California. Applicant criteria includes: incoming freshman at a University of California campus; African American, Asian American, Latino American, Native American or other heritage from an under-represented group; minimum GPA of 2.7; demonstration of financial need; preference given to students majoring in the liberal arts. Award: $1,500 Asian Pacific Fund Scholarship--Lapiz Family ScholarshipThe Lapiz Family Scholarship will grant two awards to students who are, or have parents who are, farm or migrant workers. Applicant criteria includes: incoming freshman student enrolled at the University of California (preference given to Davis and Santa Cruz campuses); farm worker or child of farm or migrant worker; minimum GPA of 3.0; demonstrates financial need; U.S. citizenship or permanent residence. Award: $1,000 Asian Pacific Fund Scholarship--Thai-American Leadership ScholarshipThe Thai-American Leadership Scholarship will grant two awards, renewable for one year, to students of Thai or other Southeast Asian heritage pursuing higher education. Applicant criteria includes: incoming freshman enrolled at an accredited, four-year U.S. college or university; Thai heritage (at least 50%)—Lao, Cambodian or various Thai ethnic minority groups will be considered; minimum GPA of 3.3; demonstrates financial need. Award: $1,000 California Alarm Association (CAA)/Electronic Security Association (ESA) 2010 Youth Scholarship ProgramThe 2010 CAA/ESA Youth Scholarship Program offers $16,000 in funds to children of active duty law enforcement and fire service personnel in the State of California who are graduating from high school in 2010. This program rewards students who have excelled academically and are active in community service and extracurricular activities at their school. To be eligible, the student must be at least 15 years of age and not older than 20. He or she must be a graduating senior who will receive a diploma from an accredited high school, located within the state. He or she must be accepted for admission to an accredited college or university. Each eligible student must have a father, mother or legal guardian who is a full-time active duty employee, and not on disability. The parent or guardian must be a member of a law enforcement agency or a full-time paid or volunteer member of a fire department located in California. Awards are based on a combination of academic achievement, national test scores, extracurricular activities and an essay about how their parent or guardian helps secure their community. The essay is judged on grammar and content and reinforces the important role that law enforcement and fire service personnel play in our community. McPheters—California Coast High School Scholarship ProgramTo be eligible, a high school senior must: 1) be a member of California Coast Credit Union, or the child, grandchild or legal ward of a member, in good standing; 2) have a cumulative high school grade point average, or equivalent, of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0; 3) be accepted by or plan to attend an accredited college or university on a full-time basis; 4) submit an application packet with all required components at the same time to California Coast Credit Union, by the deadline. Award: $500 Kaiser Permanente Asian Pacific American Network (KPAPAN) ScholarshipTo be eligible, students must be graduating from high school in spring 2010, of Asian/Pacific Islander descent and planning on attending an accredited college, university, trade or technical school in fall 210. Students must live or attend a high school in the Southern California Kaiser Permanente service area and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Award: Eight scholarships of $1,000 each U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship ProgramThis Internet Scholarship Program is available to high school seniors (graduating in the 2009-2010 school year) who plan to enroll at an eligible four-year college or university participating in the U.S. Bank No Fee Education Loan Program. Students must be enrolled by September 2010. Student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien. Award: Up to 40 $1,000 scholarships Belcher Eagle Scout Scholarship ProgramTo qualify for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria: 1) have attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the San Diego-Imperial Council of Boy Scouts of America and be currently registered in Scouting; 2) be a graduating high school senior entering college or university in the year the scholarship is applied for; 3) have achieved a high school GPA of 3.0 or above; have a SAT score of 1500 or more or an ACT score of 21 or more; have demonstrated leadership ability in Scouting and a strong record of participation in activities outside of Scouting; have need of financial assistance and provide a statement clearly stating why he believes he needs financial aid, signed by the applicant and countersigned by a parent/guardian; 7) plan to attend any recognized four-year college or university; 8) show evidence of the desire, commitment and capacity to complete an undergraduate college degree; 9) provide one signed recommendation letter from an Adult Volunteer or Professional Scouter, whom you know personally. Applicants who are willing to serve as summer camp counselors will receive special consideration in the selection process. The funding for the three two-year scholarships will be $3,500 for the first year, renewable for a second year, with at least the equivalent of one year of college credits completed and a GPA of 2.5 or above, for a total amount of $7,000 to the recipient’s college or university. Award: Unspecified San Diego Air & Space Museum ScholarshipsBill Gibbs Endowment Fund Award: Varies by Scholarship San Diego Alumnae Panhellenic ScholarshipAvailable to qualified graduating high school women who will be attending a four-year college or university that has National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) Sororities on its campus the following year after graduating. Outstanding applicants will be well-rounded women who demonstrate academic excellence, school and community involvement, and merit. Award: $800 Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego Foundation ScholarshipFor graduating seniors who have been members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego for one or more years and are planning to attend an accredited college, university or trade-technical school in the same year after graduation from high school. Applicants must register for a minimum of 12 units or equivalent training per semester. Applicants are judged on financial need, community service, evidence of leadership and citizenship and academic record (minimum 3.0 GPA). Each winner will be eligible to receive a total of up to $4,000 in payments, not to exceed $1,000 per year (recipients and award amounts shall be determined annually at the sole discretion of the Scholarship Selection Committee). Scholarships must be used for tuition, books, fees or room and board. Recipients of this scholarship are required to be full time students and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to remain eligible. Award: Described Above Portuguese-American Social & Civic Club (PASCC) ScholarshipApplications will only be considered valid if the required supporting documents are included and the following requirements are met: student must have a sponsor to apply for this scholarship, and sponsor must be a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent of Portuguese ancestry and sponsor must be a member in good standing of the PASCC for a period of no less than 12 months (minimum of one year, preceding to March); graduating senior at the time of application; 3.0 GPA in freshman, sophomore, junior years, and during at least the first semester of their senior year of high school, verified by school administrator and an official transcript; applicant must meet all requirements for admission to an accredited college or university of their choice; minimum of three letters of recommendation who will vouch for the candidate’s academic standing, character and personality; any award will be made on a competitive basis, consideration being given to scholastic attainment, character and promise. Award: $1,000 Naval Officers’ Spouses’ Club (NOSC) of San Diego ScholarshipTo be eligible, applicant must be a dependent of: an active duty Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard personnel; dependent of a retired or deceased Naval, Marine or Coast Guard military member; or a dependent of a reservist activated for a minimum of nine months. Applicant or military sponsor must reside in the greater San Diego area at the time of application. A dependant child applicant must be graduating from a San Diego area high school in the year of application, and the applicant must have applied to an accredited two- or four-year institution for full-time undergraduate study. An applicant who accepts an appointment to one of the service academies is not eligible for a NOSC scholarship. If the applicant is awarded a scholarship, they agree to have their name, hometown college/university and photo published. Previous NOSC scholarship recipients may not reapply. Award: Not Stated San Diego Chinese Women’s Association 2009-2010 ScholarshipThe San Diego Women’s Association invites graduating seniors of Chinese descent to apply for their merit scholarships. Scholarships are open to male and female students. Students must attend a San Diego high school, be at least one-quarter Chinese, have a minimum GPA of 3.0/weighted, and have immediate plans for further formal education. Award: Described Above Don Diego ScholarshipScholarships are for outstanding high school seniors who participate in activities and events at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, including the San Diego County Fair. One $5,000 scholarship is for a member of 4-H; one $5,000 scholarship is for a member of FFA; one $5,000 scholarship is for an employee; one $5,000 scholarship is for an exhibitor in events at the Del Mar Fairgrounds or Horsepark. The nominees must have demonstrated his or her ability to overcome personal obstacles associated with drugs or alcohol, a strong commitment to athletics and continuing their personal growth and development through higher education. The nomination criteria includes: high school senior who will enroll in either a two- or four-year college; has overcome personal obstacles and troubles in life associated with drugs or alcohol; athletic achievement; leadership ability; academic achievement; strong commitment to setting and reaching life goals. ScholarshipsOctavia Coleman HBCU Scholarship Award: Varies by Scholarship Building Industry Association of San Diego County 2009/2010 High School ScholarshipThe scholarship is open to all graduating high school students in San Diego County. They are looking for students who can demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the building industry. Many majors such as advertising, finance, construction management, architecture, carpentry, city planning, real estate, and interior design, to name a few, play an integral role in the building industry. The Scholarship Committee is interested in awarding scholarships to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in the building industry. Scholarships are based on qualifications including academics, personal achievement, and financial need. Award: Not Stated Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County 2010 Conservation ScholarshipThese scholarships are offered to encourage students interested in conservation, agriculture, environmental science, natural resources, biology or natural sciences to obtain technical expertise and pursue careers in resource conservation or agriculture. To be eligible, applicants must: 1) be residents within the RCD of Greater San Diego County’s sphere of influence; 2) have successfully completed three years of study at an accredited high school; 3) be nearing completion of their fourth year in high school while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better (on a 4.0 scale), and 4) expect, or have received a “notice of intent,” to enroll in undergraduate college courses related to resource conservation or agriculture. Award: Four scholarships of $1,000 each Junior Seau Foundation Scholars of Excellence ProgramThrough this program, promising high school students who have the ability to be successful in college will receive financial support so that they may achieve their goals through higher education. The criteria for selection includes: 1) applicants must be graduating from a San Diego County high school, who has committed to attend a four-year college or university beginning the fall semester 2010; 2) applicants must be United States Citizens or have permanent residency status; applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and satisfactory citizenship in school; 4) applicants must complete the entire scholarship application form and submit all materials requested. Award: Ranges between $2,500 to $5,000 Spence Reese ScholarshipFor male students who are in their senior year in high school. Applicants are judged on academic standing, academic ability, financial ability, and potential for good citizenship, and on the guidelines established by the Spence Reese Trust. Four scholarships are awarded each year, one each in the fields of medicine, engineering, law and political science. Award: Not Stated Taiwanese American Foundation of San Diego ScholarshipTo be eligible, students must be high school seniors with a GPA of 3.2 (non-weighted) or higher. The Scholarship Committee evaluates the applicants in terms of their academic achievements, service to the community, and leadership ability. Two of the scholarships given, however, are reserved for qualified applicants with financial needs. Award: $500 Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Scholarships/San Diego Indian American SocietyThe criteria for selection include: 1) academic excellence; 2) community involvement; 3) statement of purpose for college; 4) an original essay on “nonviolent means for conflict resolution”; 5) recommendations by teachers; and 6) financial need and educational background of parents. Two graduating seniors with a grade point average of at least 3.8 may be nominated from CCHS. The selection is open to all irrespective of his or her national origin. Students must be nominated. To enter, students must submit a project according to the guidelines set within each category: Fashion Executive of Tomorrow; Interior Designer of Tomorrow; Graphic Designer of Tomorrow; Fashion Designer of Tomorrow; Visual Designer of Tomorrow; Digital Media Artist of Tomorrow. Award: $1,000 Scripps Ranch Old Pros Steve Allen Memorial AwardThe Allen Family will present this scholarship to a graduating senior whose father is a member of the Scripps Ranch Old Pros. Additional requirements are: Scripps Ranch resident (92131) for the past two years; senior graduating by June 2009; scholastic achievement; minimum 2.5 GPA; athletic achievement; sports and community activities. Award: $1,000 Council of Philippine American Organizations of San Diego County, Inc. Scholarship AwardsFor Filipipino-American students who will be a graduating high school senior in any of the high schools of San Diego County in 2010. Awards are given for achievement in Academic Excellence, Leadership, and Athletics. The guidelines for 2010 are as follows: high school senior graduating in May or June 2010; GPA of at least 3.5 with no D or Fail grades in Citizenship; selection criteria includes the quality and degree of involvement in a specific category; applicants may apply for as many award categories for which they feel qualified; however, an individual applicant shall be declared outstanding and awarded in only one category. Each of the three Outstanding Student Awardees shall receive no less than $1,000 and a Plaque of Recognition to be presented during the Philippine Faire. In 2009, five additional awards of $200 each were also distributed. Each $10,000 scholarship will be paid over four years in equal installments of $2,500. Scholarships are for attendance at a four-year college or university. Students must meet the following criteria: be a high school junior; have and maintain a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 2.7 (on a 4.0 scale) through their high school career; have participated in community or volunteer activities; be planning to apply for financial assistance to attend college; must attend an accredited four-year college or university during all years for which the scholarship is awarded; must maintain a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 2.7 (on a 4.0 scale) through their college career; be eligible to attend a four-year college or university in the United States; currently reside and attend school in San Diego County/Imperial County; not have a conviction for any crime.
