Volunteer at Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas and earn indirect service hours. Please only sign up for ONE Thursday per month in order to allow other students the same opportunity. Volunteers will be helping with chores around the shelter including: laundry, dishes, helping at the food bank, and anything else that may need to be done (please note that you may chose to wear clothes you do not care about getting dirty). Volunteers will also assist shelter staff in socializing the animals currently residing at the shelter. This opportunity is every Thursday, unless there is no school, from 4pm-5pm. Looking to serve the elderly? Attend mass at the Nazareth House and then socialize with the residents afterwards any Saturday or Sunday. It’s a great way for all students to get Christian Service Hours. Mass is at 9:30 and residents gather in the rec room afterwards to break bread and share fellowship. The AYSO Soccer Buddies program will be starting up again in March and is seeking volunteers. Volunteers serve as buddies for special needs soccer players. No experience or soccer skills are needed but are welcome. A positive attitude, willingness to encourage or motivate players, and a commitment to attending at least 6 of the 8 games are needed. The dates of the games are March 15, 22 and 29; April 12, 19 and 26; and May 3 and 17. The games are held at the San Elijo Softball fields at the corner of Schoolhouse and San Elijo RD in San Marcos from 1-2pm. Volunteers are asked to arrive 15 minutes early and a training session will likely be offered on the first day. Free t-shirts are provided to the volunteers. There were a few Cathedral HS students who attended in the fall and did a fantastic job. Please see the attached flyer.

Hospice of the North Coast currently has some volunteer opportunities that students may be interested in. Notice that direct hours opportunities are for kids 18 or older, however, they have some administrative type opportunities where younger students can help and complete some of their hours too. The Principal at a very needy elementary school in Vista, CA and the parent of a CCHS graduate and an entering freshman student is looking for volunteers. 96% of her school's student population is low income and about the same percentage are learning English as a second language. Needless to say, they are trying to catch kids up academically and are looking for student volunteers to come to their school during the summer to help out. They are having a three-week literacy summer program 8:00-12:00 June 8 - 26 (M-F) at our school. They will have credentialed teachers running the program, which will be a blended-learning model. Student volunteers will work with individual students or small groups of students to read with them, practice word reading, talk about books and get help on computer applications. The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation is looking for summer camp counselor volunteers age 12 and up to help out July 27 - August 14, 2015 from 8:30am-3:00pm with their Environmental Kids Summer Camp. (To serve as a camp counselor for the older group which consists of 6th-8th grade students who participate in kayaking, the volunteers must be 14+).
