Summer SchoolCCHS offers summer school classes for remediation, advancement, and enrichment. Classes are offered in a variety of different subjects and run for six weeks from 8:00 am – 12:15 pm. Mrs. Marlena Conroy Workshops (Incoming Freshmen – Invitation Only) | $265 (per session)Session 1: June 21 – July 19, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. English Study Skills | Grade 9 | Session 2 Four (4) week course. Math Study Skills | Grade 9 | Session 1 Four (4) week course. Non-unit Workshops | $133Session 1: June 21 – July 1, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Pre-AP Bootcamp | Grade 10 | Sessions 1 and 2 Required Materials: AP course textbook and AP summer assignment. AP Book Camp is a non-credit workshop that prepares students who have never taken an AP course to transition successfully with the skills and study habits needed for college level work. The workshop emphasizes hands-on practice with the independent study and management skills needed to navigate through the rigorous, accelerated pace and standards for success in Advanced Placement courses in all subjects offered at CCHS. Open to students enrolled in their first AP course at CCHS. Strongly recommended for AP World History and AP European History students. Year Courses | $767Session 1: June 21 – July 9, 8:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. (Semester 1) Students must register for both semesters of year courses if taking for advancement. If student needs to retake a single semester to make up a low grade please register for the appropriate semester. Students making up a low grade should also consult their counselors. Algebra 1 Advanced | Grades 10 and 11 | Sessions 1 and 2 Prerequisite: This class is for students who have completed Pre-Algebra or need to make up one or more semesters of Beginning Algebra. After passing this course with a C or better, students are ready for a Geometry course. Algebra 1 Advanced topics includes rational numbers and expressions, inequalities, polynomials, factoring, function notation and graphs of functions, graphing linear equations and systems of equations, radical expressions, and quadratics. Biology | Grades 10 and 11 | Sessions 1 and 2 Prerequisite: This course serves as repeat credit for students needing to make up one or more semesters of biology. Not recommended for AP advancement. Biology is an accelerated survey of cell structure and physiology, reproduction, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, classification, comparative anatomy and physiology, botany, and ecology. Chemistry | Grades 11 and 12 | Sessions 1 and 2 Prerequisite: Completion of Geometry with a minimum C grade and a C grade in Biology. This course also serves as repeat credit for students needing to make up one or more semesters of chemistry. Not recommended for AP advancement. Accelerated chemistry provides students with a basic understanding of the nature and structure of matter. Students engage in a variety of individual and group learning activities including problem solving, laboratory experiments and report writing. Students need to come equipped with scientific calculators. Dramatic Arts | Grades 10 and 11 | Sessions 1 and 2 Students study acting, directing, costume, lighting, make-up, hair and set design from the ancient Greek drama to present day. Students will explore practical applications in the field of theatrical arts Geometry | Grades 10 and 11 | Sessions 1 and 2 Prerequisite: Algebra 1 with a minimum B grade if enrolling for advancement. This course also serves as repeat credit for students needing to make up a D or below grade in Geometry. This accelerated course deals with inductive and deductive proofs, angles, perpendicular and parallel lines, congruent triangles, similar polygons, circles, right triangles, areas and volumes of solids, coordinate geometry, areas of plane figures, and constructions. Multi-Media Authoring | Grades 10 and 11 | Sessions 1 and 2 Students participate in creative video editing and build techniques in writing for television and film. Students will create a variety of media including short films and documentaries using the elements and principles of design Semester Courses | $384Session 1: June 21 – July 9, 8:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. American Government | Grade 12 | Session 1 This course studies the roles, recruitment and decision making powers of the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court. The executive, legislative, and judicial branches of our state and local governments are also examined. This class is only open to students who need space in their senior schedule for a graduation requirement. Beginning English Review | Grade 10 | Sessions 1 and 2 Each three (3) week course in English Review is equal to the remediation needed for a single semester of English. Students develop and practice the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills they need to be successful in the next year of English by completing a series of in-class projects and activities that are supported by a number of independent tasks completed at home. In order to facilitate a skills approach, the literature for this class will be an anthology of short readings rather than a series of longer works that make up the content of a full-year English course. Open to students who must remediate a D or F grade. Economics | Grade 12 | Session 2 Economics studies the principles of economics and provides students with an understanding of the economic problems and institutions of the nation and the world. Students will develop skills to make reasoned decisions on economic issues. Intermediate English Review | Grades 11 and 12 | Sessions 1 and 2 Each three (3) week course in English Review is equal to the remediation needed for a single semester of English. At this level, students practice close reading of literary texts, attentive reading of informational texts (including directions), integrating outside sources into student writing, internalizing and using the various steps of the writing process for thesis-focused essays, researching academic topics using a multi-step approach, writing to improve sentence structure and variety, self-diagnosing and revising individual grammar usage issues, and using forms of critical thinking beyond summary and identification in expository analysis papers. Open to students who must remediate a D or F grade. Speech | Grade 10 | Sessions 1 and 2 Students acquire knowledge about oral communication processes and develop effective communication skills through active participation. Students learn techniques of academic research, organization, and delivery of a variety of speeches. Physical Education Courses | $290Session 1: June 21 – July 9, 8:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Health and First Aid - CPR | Grades 10, 11 and 12 | Session 2 Students learn skills needed to respond to respiratory and cardiac emergencies, to reduce pain, and to minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional help arrives. Fulfills state health graduation requirement. Health and Fitness Training | Grades 10, 11 and 12 | Session 1 Summer Health and Fitness Training helps students develop, maintain, and increase strength, speed, and fitness from a sports perspective. Fulfills state health graduation requirement. Independent PE/Martial Arts Self Defense | Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 | Sessions 1 and 2 5 units off-campus PE. Check with your counselor for details and requirements. Swim PE | Grades 10, 11 and 12 | Sessions 1 and 2 Students in summer Swim PE will benefit from understanding, developing, and maintaining fitness with an emphasis on cardiovascular development. Emphasis will be on technique, strokes, and turns. Students must be able to swim. Suit and towel are required daily. |
